Send us your proposals – from 15 October 2025 at www.kjtz.info!

AUGENBLICK MAL! is the only nationwide performing arts festival for young audiences in Germany. It has been organised every two years since 1991 by the Children's and Youth Theatre Centre in the Federal Republic of Germany (KJTZ) in cooperation with partners in Berlin.

AUGENBLICK MAL! presents 10 selected productions from Germany: 5 productions are aimed at audiences aged 0 and above, and 5 at audiences aged 12 and above. The aim is to invite as wide a variety of theatre forms as possible. In addition to productions for stages or other venues, mobile or digital productions, as well as unexpected and surprising ones, are welcome.

AUGENBLICK MAL! 2027 will take place from 13 to 18 April 2027 in Berlin.

AUGENBLICK MAL! highlights the diversity of the performing arts for young audiences. It shows which content, themes, forms and aesthetics are currently relevant in the performing arts for young audiences. To this end, it creates spaces for reflection, discussion and work for all visitors, whether theatre professionals, interested parties or young audiences. It invites people to meet and celebrate together.

AUGENBLICK MAL! provides significant impetus for youth policy through the active and decisive participation of children and young people. They represent their perspectives, interests and experiences in the proposal and selection process, in the conception and production of the festival.

AUGENBLICK MAL! breaks down barriers and creates access. In the selection of guest performances, in the conception and during the festival itself, it consciously acts in a critical manner towards power and discrimination.

AUGENBLICK MAL! reaches theatre makers from Germany and around the world, as well as children, young people and families in Berlin. Students and teachers, international multipliers, teachers, politicians and decision-makers are invited and involved.

A laboratory for youth participation: ‘Theatre should change and evolve’

Over the past few months, the 15- to 24-year-olds interested in theatre have been able to gain insights into almost all areas of the festival's planning.

Who is the representation for young perspectives?

10 October 2022
Originally, we were just an outraged youth editorial team. After our outcry about the AUGENBLICK MAL!2021 led to us being integrated into the festival structures at the request of the conceptual team and the management, we also first had to find out who we wanted to be within these structures. Are we the ones who are annoying, the ones who co-curate, the ones who make their own programme?

The nominated productions for AUGENBLICK MAL! 2023

16 September 2022
What a season 2020/21! Many theatres had to stay closed for a long time due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, pre-productions were made. In many places, plays were performed digitally or open air. Indoor "premieres" without young audiences were the rule. Then, towards the end of the season: redemption. Finally, the theatres were allowed to invite young people back into their rooms and halls, even if the number of visitors was significantly reduced.

30 years of children's theater festival for adults

1 May 2021
After Arne Vogelgesang said on stage that theater can't do anything, the chat among the audience was quite busy asking what theater can do. And once again it became clear: there are more professionals than young people at this festival. I felt slain after the play.
